Sleep age guide · first responders
Sleep age calculator for first responders
Police, firefighters, and paramedics work 24-hour shifts, get woken mid-sleep, and absorb chronic stress that fragments recovery.
The pattern we see in first responders
- Call-driven wakings during a 24-hour shift create chronically fragmented sleep architecture.
- Hypervigilance from job stress raises baseline arousal, making sleep onset harder even on off-days.
- PTSD and operational stress directly disrupt REM sleep in elevated rates compared with the general population.
Three changes that move the needle.
Strategy 1
Pre-shift power-nap protocol
A 90-minute nap before a 24-hour shift can blunt the worst of the late-shift cognitive degradation. Department policy should support, not penalize, this.
Strategy 2
Decompression rituals on off-days
10 minutes of slow nasal breathing, journaling, or progressive muscle relaxation before sleep on rest days re-engages the parasympathetic nervous system.
Strategy 3
Screen aggressively for OSA and PTSD
Both are over-represented in the population and both compound sleep age. Department health programs should screen at least annually.
